Here’s what we love about Litchfield!
About Litchfield.
Litchfield is beautiful National Historic Landmark District designated in 1968 as a notable and well-preserved example of a typical late 18th century New England village. As a National Historic Landmark, it is listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). It is the core area of a larger NRHP-listed historic district that includes the entire borough of Litchfield and was designated a state historic district in 1959.
The Litchfield Checklist
is a Connecticut state forest located in the town of Litchfield. It was formerly the summer residence of Edith Morton Chase, daughter of Henry Sabin Chase, first president of the Chase Brass and Copper Company. She left the house and its grounds to the state of Connecticut after her death in 1972. The estate house, built in 1929 to a design by Richard Henry Dana, is a fine example of a Tudor Revival country estate house, and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Near the center of the forest, and near the top of the hill, stands the former estate house of Edith Morton Chase. It is a large two story structure, with stucco half-timbered walls in the Tudor Revival style. A central section is flanked by cross-gabled wings, with large westward projection that houses a great living room with a tall ceiling. The interior is decorated in 1920’s style, and retains original fixtures and finishes. The area around the house is informally landscaped. House and grounds are absolutely spectacular!
Arethusa– The dairy built on stiletto heels.
More than a farm. The historic Arethusa Farm, first established by the Webster family in 1868 was reborn in 1999 to the new proprietors Mr. Malkemus and Mr. Yurgaitis. The Webster family who had long since sold the property with the property falling into disrepair was slated for development. How do you go from building one of the most famous luxury shoe brands in the world to running a successful dairy farm, you may ask? George Malkemus and Anthony Yurgaitis, both Manolo Blahnik executives, originally bought Arethusa Farm to protect their view and preserve the land. Mr. Malkemus and Mr. Yurgaitis couldn’t bear the thought of Litchfield losing that open space. Since that fateful day it seems each day has been a new beginning for Litchfield, Bantam, and the dairy industry in Connecticut. We can only forever thank them for giving extended breadth to Litchfield and Bantam, establishing their own dairy herd of award winning, purebred cows, restoring the dairy business to northern Connecticut, restoring and preserving pristine farmland in Litchfield, designing beautiful barns, and delivering the best ice cream in the world to the local residents with the ability to dine at one of their incredible restaurants or even purchase fresh produce from their gardens.
Little did they know that this spur of the moment venture would soon become a way of life that would build up their local community and surrounding areas. George and Anthony started out in the shoe business making a name for Manolo Blahnik as “Sex in the City’s”, Carrie Bradshaw, this skyrocketed their shoe brand to a whole new level. Looking for a new venture and having just purchased this 350 acre farmland, George and Anthony began establishing their own dairy herd of award winning, purebred cows. In time, they built up the farm and started selling their amazing dairy products in stores. Now they are known to be one of the most premiere Holstein and Jersey breeders in the world. You can visit the farm to dine at one of their incredible restaurants or even purchase fresh produce from their gardens or just take a simple stroll through the lovely village of Bantam, Ct and stop in for their divine ice cream at the creamery.
